Safety: Dummy Chains
Safety is something we take very seriously here at Olive Babywear & Accessories.
You can rest assured that all of our dummy chains have the relevant safety certifications under Australian law.
But what makes a dummy chain safe?
If you're on the market for dummy chains, you may have asked yourself this question already.
When it comes to dummy chains/dummy clips, and any baby product for that matter, safety is of the utmost importance.
That is why all of our dummy chain styles that we currently sell have been independently lab tested and certified safe in accordance with the Australian Safety Standards EN12586.
So what makes a dummy chain safe?
By law, all dummy chains must adhere to the Australian Safety Standards and be tested to ensure their safety.
With new dummy chain businesses emerging each month across Australia, being able to spot a safe dummy chain from a risky one is more important than ever.
All our dummy chains styles have gone through this gruelling testing procedure and have the relevant safety certification.
During the testing phase, dummy chains are tested for the following (including others):
-
DURABILITY: Dummy chains are made to be withstand every day use for approximately 6 months, and are tested in accordance with this time period. During the durability test, the clasps of the dummy chains are opened and closed to mimic use within a period of six months, testing their ability to withstand use by a baby without breaking and therefore becomes coming a hazard.
-
LENGTH: All dummy chains must only reach a maximum of 22cm (not including the clasp/clip itself). Anything that exceeds this length becomes a strangulation hazard. Important: If you already have a dummy chain, please measure it for yourself and dispose of it should it exceed 22cm.
-
MATERIALS: The individual materials that make up a dummy chain, including string, beads and clasps are all tested to ensure their safety. Not only are beads and other materials tested for toxicity, the clips themselves must also include ventilation holes. Ventilation holes are of the utmost importance in the unfortunate occurrence of a clip detaching from the chain and ending up in the mouth of a baby - ventilation holes ensure that the baby will not choke and air is able to pass through the clip. If your clip doesn't have ventilation holes, this can pose a risk to your little one and should be disposed of immediately.
-
PACKAGING: Packaging is also an important, yet often neglected aspect of dummy chain safety. Dummy chains MUST be accompanied by safety information, warnings, and instructions for use. Furthermore, this information must include the safety standards that the item has been tested for. Each and every one of our dummy chains is accompanied by a pamphlet that includes all the relevant information!
Important information to keep in mind
It is important to keep in mind that dummy chains are not made to last forever.
Although our dummy chains have been constructed for safe use, and have been tested and safety certified - dummy chains are not a toy.
Adult supervision is required at all times.
A child should NEVER be left alone with a dummy chain, most especially when they are sleeping.
Like any other product, dummy chains will begin to wear.
Wear & tear on dummy chains is a sign to replace with a new one to ensure safety during use.
After six months of use, or at any sign of wear and tear - replace.
